The Carlisle Foodbank (external link) was established in partnership with a number of agencies within Carlisle. Its aim is to support those who are most deprived by providing food packs or vouchers.
As well as receiving funding from Carlisle City Council and Riverside, the project has asked the "Churches Together" congregations and schools to donate to the food bank. The shopping list provides a list of staples. It is hoped, with support from Sustainable Carlisle and allotment projects, fresh produce may also be available.
A launch event, attended by the Mayor, Councillors, local MPs and representatives from our partner organisations, was held on Monday, 2 April 2012.
Carlisle Food Initiative, which works under the umbrella of Carlisle FoodBank, wants to know more about who is doing what across Carlisle District around food. Please would you tell us what activities/services you run which have a “food” connection such as lunch clubs, healthy eating workshops. We also want to know more about what facilities and equipment are available.

Referrals have been taken from agencies since Thursday, 12 April. The Foodbank will help a person or family up to three times. After this, referral agencies will be asked to look at other ways to help. The idea of the Foodbank is to help out in a crisis, not provide regular handouts to the same people.
