Carlisle Walking for Health scheme was set up to provide walking groups to encourage individuals to stay active and to reduce isolation through socialising. Our walking programme takes place on various routes including parkland and woodland across Carlisle District, urban and rural. Take the first steps to a healthier lifestyle with this programme of enjoyable walks. Walking is one of the best ways to improve your fitness and maximise health benefits. The short definition of a health walk is “a purposeful, brisk walk done on a regular basis”. It can include any walk which is specifically designed and carried out for the purpose of improving your health.
If you’re new to Walking for Health and want to know more about joining the scheme you can find all you need to know here. Below is information on the walk timetables and a list of the variety of different walks you can access dependent upon your current health level or need. Walks all take place on good paths but please wear sensible footwear. To get more information about our scheme visit our project page. We have a variety of projects including a selection of Doorstop Walks (downloadable walking routes) which you can print out and enjoy at your own pace. We recommend that new walkers attend the 'Wednesday Walking for Health' walk first due greater social support and a larger set of volunteers who can assist with your needs.
Please see below to watch a video about the scheme. The short YouTube video looks into the benefits of Health walks within the Carlisle District. It consults with various partners and users involved with the project to see their real value.
Please follow the link for the ‘Walking for Health – Health Survey’. This survey is anonymous and will ask you a series of questions regarding your health and the Walking for Health walks. We require all walkers to complete this survey before attending a walk as it helps us know and monitor the variety of walker’s health in the walking groups. Completing this survey also helps us gather useful information for future funding of the project.
Please contact CarlislePartnership@carlisle.gov.uk if you’re interested in becoming a qualified walk leader, leading walks or setting up walks in your area as we can assist with training and support. Being a walk leader is a great way to get people in your community active whilst meeting new faces.
