Stuart superUser / 27 June 2016 / Categories: Healthy City, Food Carlisle, Carlisle Dementia Action Alliance Meals On Wheels Meals on Wheels Cumbria is a not-for-profit scheme set up to ensure that nutritious meals are available to people in Carlisle, and many of the surrounding villages who are not able to make such food for themselves. All meals offered by the service are tailored to suit the preferences of older people in the community and prepared using produce sourced from local Carlisle businesses. The service also uses surplus supplies donated by supermarkets and food banks, particularly catering packs that are harder to distribute individually. Advanced in partnership, the meals are prepared by professional cooks based at the Water Street family centre in Carlisle, from where they are delivered to homes across the district by a team of volunteers, having a key link in positively impacting on our Healthy City agenda. Anyone wishing to sign up to Meals on Wheels will be given a menu each week, from which they can simply select the meals they would like to order. Menus are changed regularly, vegetarian options are available and specific dietary requirements can be catered for. Meals are available from Monday to Friday – however, people are not required to order food every day.
